After Pacific scored in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by J.B. Brown, Seattle University answered in the top of the third inning as Skip Spencer (Springfield, Ore.) doubled to left field, advanced to third on a flyout, and, after Doug Buser (Orinda, Calif.) was hit by a pitch, scored when Pacific pitcher David Rowse committed a balk.
Pacific (6-3) took the lead for good in the bottom of the third when Joe Oliveira doubled down the left field line and scored on a single by Brian Martin. Mike Walker increased Pacific's lead to 4-1 with a two-run home run to right field, his second of the season.
The Tigers increased their lead in the sixth inning, loading the bases on a walk and two singles before Ben Gorang drove in one run with a single to left field. Martin forced in another run after being hit by a pitch, with the third run of the inning scoring on a wild pitch by SeattleU reliever Cody Goodfellow (Tacoma, Wash.). The Tigers scored their final run of the night in the seventh inning on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Brett Christopher.
Conor Spink (Eagle River, Alaska) started the game for the Redhawks, taking the loss after pitching five innings, allowing nine hits and six runs while walking one and striking out three. Goodfellow gave up four hits and two runs in 1 1/3 innings of work, and Bryan Dalton (Vancouver, Wash.) finished off the night for SeattleU with 1 2/3 innings of perfect relief.
Rowse (2-0) pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and one run on 93 pitches, not allowing a walk while striking out seven Redhawk batters. No SeattleU player had more than one hit during the game, while Pacific had three batters with multiple-hit efforts, led by a 3-for-4 performance by Brown.
Seattle University (1-7) will look to break through in the third game of the series Saturday, March 6, at 2 p.m. The two teams are scheduled to finish off the weekend series Sunday, March 7, beginning at 12 noon.
