An early offense spurt in the bottom of the first was not enough, as the Seattle University softball team fell 4-3 to Utah State Sunday afternoon to conclude the Red Desert Classic. With the loss, the Redhawks fall to 0-5 on the year.

In the top of the first, Utah State established a one run lead behind a Kelley Kaneshiro RBI single to centerfield. Starting SeattleU pitcher Hannah Klein quickly got out of the inning and sent the Redhawks to the plate.

Katie Antich kicked off the bottom of the first with a single down the left field line. Megan MacIssac advanced Antich with her groundout to second. With one out and a runner on base, Lauren Berin hit her first double of the season down the right field line to score Antich. With the game tied at one, Jessica Amador was walked and Jessica Ulrich grounded to third to advance Amador and Berin. The Redhawks had runners on second and third, with two outs, when Klein slammed a single to right center to send Amador and Berin home.

After taking a 3-1 lead behind a strong offensive first inning, SeattleU kept the Aggies off the board for the following three innings. The tides changed in the top of the fifth, as USU easily got the bases loaded to kick off the inning. After getting consecutive outs from freshman relief pitcher Jessica Ulrich in her SU debut, the Redhawks looked poised to potentially get out of the inning without affecting their two run lead. The Aggies Joreigh Landers came to the plate reached on a fielding error at shortstop. The Redhawk error sent home a pair of Aggie runs, to tie the game at three-all.

Utah State scored what would be the game-winning run the following inning, off a Reilly fielder's choice RBI. In the bottom of the sixth and the seventh, SU was unable to rebound from their one run deficit to return home to Seattle with the victory.

The Redhawks return to action on Saturday, Feb. 20, with a doubleheader at New Mexico. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. PT. SU will play four games in Albuquerque, N.M. over the weekend.
