The Seattle University softball team will begin their first season as a member of the Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) Mountain Division in 2010. For the first time in program history, the Redhawks will play their first season as a member of a Division I conference.

As the 2010 campaign is set to commence in less than a month, the PCSC Preseason Coaches Poll voted SeattleU to finish in second place in the Mountain Division. The Redhawks received 50 total votes, behind conference frontrunner and defending PCSC champion Portland State, who received 72 votes and 12 first place votes.

"We are very excited about playing in the PCSC this season," said head coach Dan Powers. "We are honored to be selected second in the preseason coaches poll, but we have a lot of work ahead of us to earn that recognition. It is going to be a tough battle this season competing against so many new teams, but we are looking forward to the challenge."

Following SU in the Mountain Division are Northern Colorado (41), Utah Valley (37), Idaho State (34) and Weber State (18).

For the Coastal Division, Sacramento State nabbed the division's first place with 68 votes. Loyola Marymount (53) and Saint Mary's (42) landed in second and third places, respectively. Rounding out the division were San Diego (39), Cal State Bakersfield (34) and Santa Clara (16).

The Redhawks, who competed as an independent in 2009, finished 18-20 overall. SU returns 11 letterwinners and five starters, including senior outfielder Katie Antich, who had 37 hits, 22 runs and 3 RBIs for a .380 batting average.

SeattleU will kick off the season at the Red Desert Classic for a three day tournament in Saint George, Utah. Their first game will be against new conference rival Northern Colorado on Friday, Feb. 12. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. PT.

As part of SeattleU's reclassification into full Division I status, the Redhawks will not be eligible for postseason play this year. SU will be eligible for NCAA Tournament play in 2013.
