The Seattle University women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the 2010 season with a 6-1 win over South Dakota in the morning match, but could not keep the momentum going in the afternoon as Gonzaga posted a 6-1 decision Saturday at the indoor tennis courts at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Freshman Steffanie Mortera (Portland, Ore.) was the top player of the day for Seattle University, winning both singles matches in the number five position. She defeated Isabel Nunez of South Dakota in the morning (6-2, 6-2) and followed that with a straight-set victory over Gonzaga's Clare Dodge in the afternoon (6-0, 6-4). Mortera also teamed with Ariel Ohno (Kent, Wash.) to defeat Nunez and Brittney Smith of South Dakota in the number two doubles slot, 8-0.

Against South Dakota, Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) defeated Melanie Rockne in straight sets (6-2, 6-1), while Audree Jenks (Albuquerque, N.M.) earned a hard-fought three-set victory over Marina Kiefer (6-7 (3-7), 7-5, 6-2). Whitney Cheng (Seattle, Wash.) defeated Rijalda Zejnic in straight sets (6-2, 6-2), as did Aya Sugimoto (Poulsbo, Wash.) over Kelsi Foster (6-2, 6-2).

The Redhawks swept the Coyotes in the doubles sets, as Jenks and Nicole Fleckenstein (Seattle, Wash.) defeated Shadi Soleymani and Kiefer, 8-2, and Schwab and Cheng teamed up for an 8-3 victory over Zejnic and Foster.

Besides Mortera's victory, Schwab took Gonzaga's Rika Mehndiratta to a super-tiebreaker after winning the second set in that tiebreaker, 7-3. However, Mehndiratta was able to pull out the match with a 10-5 victory in the third set. Freshman Gina Bloemers (Tacoma, Wash.) made her 2010 debut in the number six singles position, but lost to Sophie Lantta of Gonzaga in straight sets (6-3, 6-2).

Seattle University (1-2) will host Pacific Lutheran in the only scheduled home match of the season Friday, Feb. 5, beginning at 2:30 p.m. at the Amy Yee Tennis Center.
