In the program's first conference match in almost two years, the Seattle University men's soccer team hung with the University of New Mexico, but the Lobos scored a goal early in the second half and held on for a 1-0 victory Friday night in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener for both teams at the UNM Soccer Complex.

Almost five minutes into the second half, Justin Davis set up Josh Caffey, who picked up the ball in the box and won a one-on-one battle with SeattleU goalie Ivan Dizdar (Phoenix, Ariz.), putting the ball into the net for what would turn out to be the game-winning goal. This came after a first half in which there were no shots on goal by either side.

New Mexico (7-4, 1-0 MPSF) kept up the pressure, especially Davis, who would end up with three shots on goal in the first nine minutes after halftime. Dizdar kept SeattleU in the match with save after save, finishing the night with six saves, all in the second half. In the 76th minute, a shot by New Mexico's Levi Rossi seemed destined for the back of the net, but it was turned away by the Redhawk defense.

On the other hand, Seattle University was not credited with a shot on goal until about two minutes remaining in regulation, as a shot by Sean Morris (Bothell, Wash.) was stopped by Lobo goalie Justin Fite. The Redhawks' best chances came in the first half, as several shots were just off target, including a blast from Kevin Cook (Gresham, Ore.) in the 30th minute that hit the crossbar.

Seattle University (1-8-1, 0-1 MPSF) heads to Las Vegas, Nev., for a conference match against UNLV Sunday, Oct. 18, beginning at 1 p.m. The Redhawks will return home for the first MPSF matches at Championship Field next weekend, welcoming Sacramento State Friday, Oct. 23, at 2:30 p.m. and San Jose State Sunday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m.
