Playing a man down most of the evening, the Seattle University men's soccer team could not stop the quick strike of Marist College, as the Red Foxes used three first-half goals on their way to a 3-1 victory Friday at the Hensor/Zaher Classic, hosted by Oregon State at Lorenz Field.

Marist (4-2-1) controlled the play early, taking three shots in the first three minutes of the match. In the seventh minute, Demaci Roussos (Sacramento, Calif.) was issued a red card for a foul in the SeattleU box. Krystian Witkowski took advantage of the situation, converting on a penalty kick chance for his first goal of the season.

The Red Foxes continues to press the action, as Joe Touloumis sent a crossing pass into the box, and Lucas Szabo was able to redirect the ball into the net to give Marist a 2-0 lead. Seattle University finally produced some offense, led by Brandon Hamer (Carmichael, Calif.), who took three shots over the next ten minutes, two of which were stopped by Marist goalie Joe Pilla. However, Szabo picked up his second goal of the match in the 29th minute to extend Marist's lead to 3-0.

SeattleU finally broke through 11 minutes into the second half, as this time it was the Redhawks that drew the foul in the penalty box. Sean Morris (Bothell, Wash.) converted on the penalty kick chance for his second goal of the season. Morris had another chance in the 67th minute, but his header went wide, and Pilla picked up another save off a shot from Kevin Cook (Gresham, Ore.) in the 75th minute.

After picking up a yellow card in the 63rd minute, Kyle Peterman (Boise, Idaho) was given a red one in the 86th minute, eliminating him from the match and forcing Seattle University to play the rest of the match down two men. By virtue of their red cards, Roussos and Peterman will be forced to sit out tomorrow's match against Northern Illinois.

Emerson DeOliveira (Normandy Park, Wash.) finished the night with two saves for Seattle University, while Pilla earned five saves for the Red Foxes. The Redhawks earned a slight advantage in total shots, 10-9, while the Red Foxes held the lead in corner kicks, 7-5.

Seattle University (1-5-1) heads right back on the pitch tomorrow morning, facing Northern Illinois in the third match of the Hensor/Zaher Classic beginning at 11 a.m. at Lorenz Field. The Redhawks will then have a full week to prepare for their next home match, as Simon Fraser visits Championship Field Saturday, Oct. 3, for a 2:30 p.m. contest.
