In a midweek matchup, the Seattle University women's soccer team drew 1-1 in double overtime with Portland State University for their first tie of the season. Despite controlling the score for most of the game and taking a first half 1-0 lead, the Redhawks could not come out of Oregon with their first road win of the season. SU is now 5-5-1 on the season.
With less than five minutes remaining in the first half, junior Kara Kuttler found the back of the net for the sixth time this season. The Portland State goalkeeper attempted to clear the ball out of the box and Kuttler intercepted it to get SU on the board right before halftime. The Redmond, Wash. native tallied five shots in the game, three of which were on goal.
Prior to Kuttler's goal, PSU came out of the gate firing and kept goalkeeper Madison Goverde on her toes. The Seattle 'keeper had a season-high 10 saves on the night. Just as the game got underway they fired off consecutive shots, before SU could get the ball to their end of the field. The Vikings outshot the Redhawks 21-12, with 11 shots on goal to SU's four. Until late in the second half, the SeattleU defense was able to keep the Portland State offense at bay.
The PSU offense bombarded the Seattle goal in the second half, as they fired off 11 of their 21 shots in the second period. With less than 10 minutes to go their offensive fervor paid off as they came back and tied the game late in the second half off a Dolly Enneking goal. She received a long ball from Emily Rhode and headed it in past Goverde at the 82:06 minute mark. With the tying one-all goal the game went into overtime. It was SU's first overtime contest all season.
Despite having three solid scoring opportunities off shots from Jamie Coe and Kuttler, the Redhawks could not get the ball to the back of the net sending the game into double overtime. In the second overtime period SU had two shots to PSU's three, and each 'keeper had a save apiece. After 110 minutes of play the game ended in a tie at one-all.
"We played pretty good soccer and had some great opportunities, especially in overtime," said head coach Julie Woodward. "They scored a great goal and we defended well. The team is starting to possess the ball much better. That was a game we would have liked to have won."
Seattle returns to the comforts of home at Championship Field on Sunday, Sept. 27, when they host the University of San Francisco. The match is slated for 1 p.m.
