Seattle University head women's basketball coach Joan Bonvicini will kick off the inaugural year of the Future Redhawks Program during the 2009-10 season. Bonvicini and the rest of the SU women's basketball program will work with local girls from December through February.

"We are very excited to have young athletes on campus to work with our current Redhawk players and coaches," said Bonvicini. "Our ultimate goal is to develop and mentor future SeattleU Redhawks. This will be a great learning experience for all participants and will be a lot of fun."

Girls' grades third through fifth, and sixth through eighth will make up the Future Redhawks Program. They will be split into different groups based on grade, and drafted and coached by current SeattleU women's basketball players. The Future Redhawk participants will compete in a competitive 10-game schedule, receive instruction, and a private invitation to get up close and personal with their favorite Seattle players, among a multitude of other benefits associated with being enrolled in the program.

Future Redhawks will be an all-encompassing program, as participants will learn life lessons beyond the court. In addition to playing in games and receiving on-floor instruction, coaches will address the importance of staying in school, living a drug and gang-free lifestyle, respecting their parents and adults, team play and the proper attitude on-and-off the court.

The program will meet six Sunday afternoons throughout the Redhawk women's basketball season. The first meeting will be on Sunday, Dec. 13, from 1-4 p.m. in the Connolly Center on the Seattle University campus. Space is limited to the first 120 girls to sign up.
