This is the first Player of the Week honor for a Seattle University program as a member of a Division I conference since the beginning of the transition to Division I last year. This follows Seattle University's first victory as a Division I school over a Pac-10 opponent since the reclassification process began.
During regulation, Roussos helped slow down an Oregon State offense that had scored 12 goals in the previous five matches. In overtime, the defender found open space in front of the Beaver net and dove at a crossing pass, using his head to direct the ball past the Oregon State goalie into the net 3:34 into the overtime period.
The goal was Roussos' first career goal for Seattle University, as he came into his second season with one career assist, helping on the game-winning goal in SeattleU's 2-1 victory at Florida Gulf Coast on Sept. 12, 2008. Last year, he was part of a defense that posted a 0.90 goals against average for the season, including five shutouts.
Roussos shares this week's conference honor with Nick Marshall of UNLV, who scored two goals, including the game-winner, against Florida Gulf Coast. Seattle University joined the MPSF this season and will be competing for the regular season title against Air Force, Cal State Bakersfield, Denver, New Mexico, Sacramento State, San Jose State, and UNLV.
The Seattle University men's soccer team heads to Corvallis, Ore., for the Hensor/Zaher Memorial Classic, hosted by Oregon State at Lorenz Field. The Redhawks (1-4-1) will face Marist (3-2-1) Friday, Sept. 25, at 5:30 p.m., followed by a contest against Northern Illinois (3-3-1) Saturday, Sept. 26, at 11:00 a.m. SeattleU's next home match is Saturday, Oct. 3, against Simon Fraser beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Championship Field.
