The Seattle University women's tennis team started the 2009-10 season at the Cougar Classic, hosted by Washington State University over the weekend at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.

Aya Sugimoto (Poulsbo, Wash.) earned a couple of victories over the weekend, first defeating Justine Textor of Idaho on Friday (3-6, 7-5, 6-0) before losing to Jessica Gomez of Washington State. In the consolation bracket, Sugimoto defeated Cara Lehman of Montana on Saturday (6-0, 7-6 (8-6)), but Lehman's teammate Kayla Moyse was able to win the Sunday match.

Three other Redhawks moved through the consolation bracket after losing their first-round matches. Sophomore Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) defeated Taurie Bjerken of Gonzaga (6-1, 6-3), Tessa Mini of Portland (6-1, 6-3), and Rocio Norena of Eastern Washington (6-0, 6-2). Newcomers Gina Bloemers (Tacoma, Wash.) and Steffanie Mortera (Portland, Ore.) also earned multiple victories each: Bloemers defeated Judy Liening (3-6, 6-3, 10-5), Marta Tosic (7-5, 6-7, 10-5), and Alix Silha (2-6, 7-5, 10-7), all of Washington State, and Mortera beat Textor (6-0, 6-0) and Kylea Gleason of Portland State (6-0, 6-1).

Returning players Ariel Ohno (Kent, Wash.) and Whitney Cheng (Seattle, Wash.) each picked up one victory over the weekend. On Sunday, Ohno defeated Caitlin Bampton of Eastern Washington (2-6, 6-3, 10-8), while Cheng won Friday's match over Anya Dalkin of Portland State (6-7 (2-7), 6-1, 10-3).

In doubles, the duo of Schwab and Bloemers picked up the only victories for Seattle University, first defeating Tosic and Silha of Eastern Washington in the main draw, 8-4. After losing to Laura Villegas and Ali Griffen of Montana State, Schwab and Bloemers moved into the consolation bracket, lost to Gomez and Andjela Kankaras of Washington, but recovered to defeat Lehman and Lauren Gibson of Montana, 8-4.

The Seattle University women's tennis team will complete the fall schedule next weekend by competing in the Eastern Washington/Gonzaga Tournament, hosted by the Eagles in Cheney, Wash.
