This Week For The Redhawks: After a lone match in California, the Seattle University women's soccer team will travel to Eugene, Ore. to participate in the Oregon Nike Tournament. The Redhawks will square off with Oregon State (3-1-0) on Friday, Sept. 11, at 4:30 p.m. and close out the weekend with tournament host the University of Oregon (2-1-1) on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 1 p.m. Both contests versus the pair Pacific-10 opponents will be played at Pape' Field on the Oregon campus.
Last Time Out: The Redhawks split results in their last two contests. They closed out the month of August with a 2-0 shutout over Eastern Washington University (Aug. 31). After a scoreless back-and-forth first half, the SU tandem of sophomore Taylor Fannin and junior Kara Kuttler combined for both goals. In the 75th minute, Kuttler crossed the ball to Fannin, who shot it to the far right post past the diving EWU goalkeeper. Forty-nine seconds later, Fannin this time crossed the ball to Kuttler, who shot it in to solidify the Redhawks fourth shutout of the season.
Seattle could not hold onto their early lead at Cal Poly on Sept. 4. After going into halftime with a 1-0 lead, off a Kuttler goal, CP scored back-to-back late second half goals to prevent SU from earning their fifth win of the season.
On Deck: SU will return to Seattle to host Utah State on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m. at Championship Field. Following a solo home contest, the Redhawks will make a quick trip to Portland State on Tuesday, Sept. 22. Their game against the Vikings is slated for 7 p.m. On Sept. 27, SeattleU will host the University of San Francisco at 1 p.m.
Coach Woodward's Take: "We are looking forward to playing two solid teams from the Pac-10 Conference," said head coach Julie Woodward. "It will be a great test for us, having to play two tough teams in a weekend. Playing six games in 15 days has been a challenge, so it has been nice and a relief actually having a full week of practice to work on the things we needed to improve on."

Scouting Oregon State: The Beavers of Oregon State head to Oregon Nike Tournament behind a 3-1 overall record. After suffering a 1-0 loss in their season opener to Portland State on Aug. 21, at home, they have gone onto win three consecutive contests. They are coming off a 4-0 shutout over the University of Nevada. Senior Red Nixon tacked on two goals in their defeat over Nevada.
Leading the Beaver offense is Chelsea Buckland, who in has three goals and one assist for seven points. In goal, Colleen Boyd posts a 1.00 goals against average, 13 saves and has allowed three goals.
Scouting Oregon: Oregon enters this weekend's tournament after earning their second win of the season. They defeated No. 15 Colorado 2-1 on Sept. 6. Two days prior, they tied Colgate 1-1 in double overtime. Both contests were played at the Colorado Classic.
Leading the Ducks in 2009 is junior Jen Stoltenberg. In four games, she has three goals and an assist. Between the posts, Cody Miles has a 1.18 goals against average, 14 saves and has allowed five goals.
Forty-Nine Seconds!: The Redhawks scored goals 49 seconds apart in their 2-0 defeat over Eastern Washington on Aug. 31. Taylor Fannin scored the game-winner at the 75th minute mark. Kara Kuttler, who served up the game-winning assist, then received the ball from Fannin to score the game-solidifying goal 49 seconds later. It was the shortest amount of time between goals this season for Seattle.
Kuttler Takes Off: Junior Kara Kuttler had a breakout week scoring two goals and tacking on a game-winning assist. On Aug. 31, versus Eastern Washington she crossed the ball to Taylor Fannin, who scored the game-winning goal in the 75th minute. Forty-nine seconds later Fannin crossed the ball to Kuttler, who this time got it to the back of the net to solidify the Redhawks fourth shutout of the season.
On Sept. 4, she scored SU's lone goal in the first half over Cal Poly to bring her season total to three goals and two assist, for eight points.
Fannin Scores First Career Goal: After a slow start, the Seattle Redhawks earned their fourth shutout over Eastern Washington on Aug. 31, behind sophomore Taylor Fannin's game-winning goal. The goal came in the 75th minute off a Kara Kuttler cross. The score was Fannin's first career goal. Less than a minute later she crossed the ball to Kuttler, who got on the board to score back-to-back Redhawk goals.
Redhawks Tally Four Shutouts: Seattle boasts four shutout victories in six games played this season. They have shutout Boise State (Aug. 21) and Idaho (Aug. 23) 1-0, respectively, and Utah Valley (Aug. 28) and Eastern Washington (Aug. 31) 2-0, respectively.
Youngsters Continue to Make Impact: Head coach Julie Woodward has been able to call upon the underclassmen on her roster to be consistent contributors. This season three underclassmen: Maddy Cartwright, Taylor Fannin and Lauren Munechika have each scored a goal, and freshmen Taylor Bolibol, Liana Heberer and Carlee Norquist each have earned starts this season. Norquist has started in all six games this season.
