SMU (1-1) broke through at the 36:41 mark, as Dane Saintus set up Paulo da Silva, who headed the ball into the net for his first goal of the season. Just over two minutes later, Saintus again set up the play, this time finding Arthur Ivo, whose shot from 18 yards out found the right corner of the net to give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead.
The Mustangs did not rest offensively, as da Silva earned his second goal of the match with just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation by dribbling around the SeattleU defenders and driving in a shot from 25 yards out. Saintus converted on his own shot with 4:15 remaining in the match to close out the scoring.
SMU dominated the action, outshooting SeattleU, 17-6. Craig Hill made two saves, both in the first half, to earn the shutout for the Mustangs. Emerson DeOliveira (Normandy Park, Wash.) made his two saves in the second half, with Alex McCrackin (Rio Linda, Calif.) and Kyle Peterman (Boise, Idaho) being credited with SeattleU's shots on goal.
Seattle University (0-2-1) continues one of the toughest stretches of matches in school history next weekend, traveling to Notre Dame, Ind., to participate in the Hilton Garden Inn Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament. On Friday, Sept. 11, SeattleU will face Notre Dame, followed by a match on Sunday, Sept. 13, against traditional power Indiana. The next home match for the Redhawks is Saturday, Sept. 19, against Oregon State beginning at 12:30 p.m. at Championship Field.
