Austen Powers, the leading scorer for the Seattle University men's basketball team during the 2008-09 season, has signed a contract to play professional basketball in the Portuguese LPB basketball league, the top division in Portugal.

Powers is scheduled to join Fisica Desportiva de Torres Vedras by Sept. 14. The basketball season in Portugal lasts for at least seven months, but Powers hopes to spend a little more time overseas by helping his team reach the playoffs.

"I am excited about this really good opportunity," Powers said. "This is a good setting for me, and I expect an easy adjustment as this league tends to mirror the American collegiate basketball experience. I hope to play well enough to potentially continue my career either in this league or in one of the top leagues in Spain."

Powers started all 29 games for Seattle University last season, which posted a 21-8 record for the most wins since the 1984-85 season and the highest winning percentage since the 1963-64 campaign. He led the team in scoring with 12.9 points per game and was second in rebounding with 6.4 rebounds per contest. Powers scored in double figures 17 times and pulled down ten or more rebounds in four games. He scored a season-high 28 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field, including four three-pointers, in a four-point loss to postseason participant Portland on Jan. 4.

Powers earned second team All-Independent honors after the season, and he was also named to the All-Tournament Team at the Great Alaska Shootout after leading SeattleU with 16 points in the team's historic first win as a Division I program over a Division I school in 28 years by defeating Louisiana Tech on Thanksgiving night. Powers also was named Second Team Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The 6'8" post player had been working in the Seattle University athletic department as a graduate assistant in the promotions department, running the intermission promotions during the opening home events of the 2009 fall season.
