The Seattle University men's soccer team had its chances, especially late in the match, but the Washington Huskies were able to hold off the Redhawks for a 1-0 victory in the 2009 opener for both teams Tuesday afternoon at Championship Field.

After a scoreless first period, Washington struck 3:43 into the second half, as Brent Richards sent a shot on goal that SeattleU goalie Emerson DeOliveira (Normandy Park, Wash.) deflected. However, the ball stayed in front of the net, and Ryan Moore collected the rebound and chipped it in.

The Seattle University offense turned up the heat, forcing Husky goalkeeper Rylan Hawkins to make three saves during the second half. With less than three minutes remaining in regulation, Demaci Roussos (Sacramento, Calif.) sent a grounder into the box that slid by Hawkins, but defender Tyler Klein was able to kick the ball away before it crossed the goal line.

Sean Morris (Bothell, Wash.) led the Redhawks with five total shots, including two shots on goal. Richards and Casey Cunningham were credited with five shots each for the Huskies, including two shots on goal apiece. De Oliveira finished with five saves in the match, four of them coming in the second half.

Washington (1-0) outshot Seattle University, 18-14, while each team earned three corner kicks, all in the second half. The action in the first half tended to stay in the middle of the field, but quickly moved to a back-and-forth clip as the second half began.

Seattle University (0-1) heads to Tulsa, Okla., for the Hurricane Classic, facing #14 Tulsa Friday night, Sept. 4, at 7:30 p.m. local time, and SMU Sunday, Sept. 6, at 12:00 p.m. Central time. The Redhawks host Oregon State in their next home game Saturday, Sept. 19, beginning at 12:30 p.m. at Championship Field.
