This Week For The Redhawks: The Seattle University women's soccer team will kick off the 2009 campaign with a pair of home matches. They will host their season and home opener on Friday, Aug. 21, versus the Boise State Broncos (0-0-0) at 5 p.m. on Championship Field. Two days later, on Sunday, Aug. 23, SU will close out their opening weekend with Idaho (0-0-0) in a match slated for noon.

On Deck: After hosting two home games, SeattleU will take to the road for a pair of contests. They will first travel to cross-town rival University of Washington on Wednesday, Aug. 26. The Redhawks will square off with the Huskies at 7 p.m. at Huskies Soccer Stadium. On Friday, Aug. 28, the team will travel to Moscow, Idaho for a neutral sited match versus Utah Valley State. SU will play the Wolverine Green at 4 p.m.
2008 Recap: After their first season in Division I, the SeattleU women's soccer team posted a 12-5-3 overall record, including six shutouts and an undefeated record at home (4-0-1). Jamie Coe had a breakout season at forward, scoring a team-high 11 goals and notching on two assists for 24 points. Midfielder Kara Kuttler combined with Coe to bolster the offense in 2008. Kuttler tallied a team-leading seven assists and scored five goals for 17 points during her sophomore campaign.
The Redhawk defense was led by veteran Kate Edstrom, who helped guide the team to 10 wins over fellow DI opponents. In goal, Madison Goverde stepped up as the lone SU 'keeper during her freshman season. She tallied a 1.02 GAA and 56 saves, while allowing only 21 goals.
Scouting Boise State: The Boise State Broncos will kick off their 2009 season at Championship Field versus the Redhawks. BSU is coming off a school record 11-win season, after going 11-8-2 overall, and finishing in fourth-place in the WAC with 3-3-1 conference record. Boise State is a very young squad, with 21 of their 28-player roster made up of underclassmen.
In their last meeting the Redhawks edged the Broncos 2-1 to take the Governor's Cup title in Moscow, Idaho on Sept. 7, 2008. BSU's early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute was short lived, as Jamie Coe's strike in the 15th minute tied the game at one-all. In the 73rd minute, Maryann Boddy slammed in the game-winning goal. The Redhawks own a 1-0-0 all-time series record over the Idaho based squad.
Boise State heads to the Pacific Northwest behind junior Shannon Saxton. The Bronco forward was named the WAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year.
Scouting Idaho: After opening their 2009 campaign at No. 21 Washington State on Friday, Aug. 21, Idaho will travel to Seattle. The Vandals, who went 1-16-2 in 2008, return 11 letterwinners and seven starters.
In their last meeting, SU shutout UI 1-0 at the Governor's Cup in Moscow, Idaho on Sept. 5, 2008. Maryann Boddy scored the match-winning goal over Idaho. SU posts a 1-0-0 all-time record versus the Vandals.
Leading IU in 2008 was junior forward Jenn Hull. She currently is their active leader in goals (8), assists (3), shots (94) and points (19).
SeattleU in 2009: The Redhawks enter 2009 with 14 letterwinners and seven starters returning to the pitch. SeattleU welcomes 10 newcomers, including junior goalkeeper Liz Homer from Walla Walla Community College. Head coach Julie Woodward added the most depth in the midfield, with eight of the nine incoming freshmen are experienced midfielders.
Winning Coach Returns For 13th Season: Head Coach Julie Woodward returns to the field for her 13th season at the helm of the SeattleU women's soccer program. During her tenure she's amassed a 175-57-22 overall record, a .675 winning percentage and 12 consecutive winning seasons. After returning to her alma mater in 1997, she has led the program into the Division I transition and is the winningest coach in Redhawk women's soccer history.
Coe, Edstrom and Peterson to Captain the Redhawks: Seniors Jamie Coe, Kate Edstrom and Jamie Peterson will serve as tri-captains for the women's soccer squad in 2009. Each have been with the team since their freshmen seasons and have been consistent contributors in their three-year varsity careers.
Tenney and Hultin Join Coaching Staff: Head coach Julie Woodward announced the joining of assistant coach Allison Tenney and volunteer assistant goalkeeping coach Katie Hultin to the Redhawk women's soccer program this past off-season.
Tenney, a 2005 graduate of George Mason, will serve as the team's fitness coach, while Hultin will work specifically with the goalkeeping staff, after a standout four-year career at Washington State (2001-05).
Dean's Back: After missing 2008 with an injury, veteran forward Sarah Dean returns to the lineup. As an underclassmen she combined for four goals, four assists and 12 points.
Ten Newcomers Round Out Lineup: Head coach Julie Woodward signed 10 newcomers to the 2009 roster. Junior transfer Liz Homer will serve as an additional goalkeeper, and nine freshmen will look for time in the field.
Division I!: SeattleU will compete in their second complete season at the NCAA Division I level. The Redhawks currently play as an independent in DI. As a "fast tracked" sport, SU will be eligible to compete in the NCAA Tournament in 2010.
