After losing to host school Texas-Pan American, 4-2, the women’s tennis team recovered to defeat New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), 4-1, to finish the weekend 2-2 and in third place at the National Independent Tournament at the .
Whitney Cheng (), named to the All-Tournament Team at the end of the competition, won both of her singles matches in straight sets Sunday, defeating Andrea Salvetova of Texas-Pan American (6-3, 6-3) and Isha Toor of NJIT (6-4, 6-4). Nicole Fleckenstein (, ) also had a solid day for SeattleU, defeating Fanny Aizier of NJIT in the afternoon singles (6-2, 6-2) and also teaming with Audree Jenks () to help SeattleU clinch the doubles point in both contests.
By sweeping all of its matches over the weekend, Chicago State (4-0) won the tournament, with Texas-Pan American (3-1) finishing second, followed by Seattle University, Longwood University (1-3), and NJIT (0-4).
The women’s tennis team finishes the 2009 spring season with a 6-8 overall record, including four victories over Division I schools ( , , Longwood, and NJIT) in the first year of the transition to Division I for the reborn program.
