The Seattle University women’s tennis team dropped a tough loss for the second time this season to the Gonzaga Bulldogs, 6-1, Friday afternoon at the Gonzaga University tennis courts.
Whitney Cheng (Seattle, Wash.) recorded the lone victory for SU during singles play as she was able to defeat Gonzaga’s number four player, Clare Dodge, in three sets (6-1, 2-6, 6-2). In the number five spot, Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) dropped a heart breaker in her hometown, losing in three sets to Madeline Edson-White (1-6, 6-3, 10-7).
In the number one spot, Audree Jenks (Albuquerque, N.M.) lost to Aglaya Kokurina in straight-sets (6-1, 6-2). Ariel Ohno (Kent, Wash.) dropped the number two spot in straight-sets to Rika Mehndiratta (6-4, 6-1). In the number three spot, Nicole Fleckenstein (Seattle, Wash.) dropped a tight straight-set loss to Kristina Zauere (6-3, 6-4), while Aya Sugimoto (Poulsbo, Wash.) dropped the six spot to Laura Housinger in straight-sets (7-5, 6-2).
On the doubles side, Schwab and partner Mikalea Peterson (Spokane, Wash.) were able to pull out a convincing victory over Edson-White and Housinger in the number three spot, 8-3. Jenks and Fleckenstein were defeated in the number one spot by Zauere and Kokurina, 8-0, and in the number two spot, Ohno and Cheng dropped a close match with Dodge and Mehndiratta, 9-7.
The women’s team will return to action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. in Cheney, Washington when they take on Eastern Washington.
