The softball team had its chances to overcome an early deficit, but was able to make enough plays late in the game to hold on for a 3-2 victory Friday afternoon in SeattleU’s home opener at Logan Field.
In the top of the second inning, Concordia (11-1) jumped on the board as, after two walks, Robin Gawlista singled to drive in Janelle Cristofaro with the first run of the game. Becca Gawlista followed with a triple that cleared the bases and gave the Cavaliers a 3-0 lead.
SeattleU broke through in the bottom of the third inning, as the Redhawks loaded the bases with two walks and a single. Jodie Schmehr (, ) hit a slow grounder to the left side that no one could handle, allowing Lisa Hill () to score. Jamie Foote () led off the fifth inning with a home run to left-center field that brought SeattleU within one at 3-2.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Katie Petersen () led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Foote. After Hill was intentionally walked, Lauren Berin (Lacey, ) hit a single to left field that loaded the bases. Pinch hitter Kate Zender () hit a bouncer back to Cavalier pitcher Danielle Pulfrey, who started a 1-2-3 double play that ended the threat and the game.
Pulfrey picked up her seventh victory of the season for the Cavaliers, allowing seven hits and six walks while striking out six Redhawk batters. Hannah Klein (, ) allowed Concordia’s three runs on two hits and three walks to take the loss, while Kelsey Reynolds () pitched 5 2/3 innings of solid relief, allowing only two hits while striking out two batters.
(6-9) will look to rebound as it hosts in a doubleheader Saturday, March 14, beginning at 11 a.m. at Logan Field. Live stats for both games will be available on GoSeattleU.com.
