After helping the Seattle University men's swim team earn a fourth-place finish at the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships in Long Beach, Calif., last week, sophomore Andrew Martinez (Concord, Calif.) has been named the Featured Student-Athlete of the Week on GoSeattleU.com.
Martinez started off the championship meet by anchoring the 800 freestyle relay team to a fourth-place finish with a time of 7:00.01. On the second day, he finished 11th in the 500 freestyle in 4:46.34. He also swam the third leg in the 200 freestyle relay for the quartet that finished 11th in the event with a time of 1:28.10.
During Friday's session, Martinez finished second in the "B" final of the 200 freestyle, placing 10th overall with a time of 1:43.83. On the final day of the meet, he finished tenth in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 16:35.99. All of his individual times were personal bests as he helped the team total 1,078.5 points over the four-day event.
"Andrew has been a major contributor throughout the season, and he is an all-around good guy," acting head coach Kat Cuevas said. "He had a great meet, lowering all of his personal best times, and I think he is a great choice for this week's honor."
In the classroom, Martinez currently has a 3.175 grade point average towards earning a degree in business administration. As the team continues the transition to Division I status, he will be counted on as one of the leaders to help guide his teammates through the tough stretches of the process.
