The women’s tennis team came up short in their bid to defeat Portland State for the second time this season, falling to the Vikings 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the LP Tennis Center in Portland.
In singles play, Whitney Cheng (Seattle, Wash.) was the only Redhawks player to come away with a victory. The number four seed had a convincing win over Caitlin Stocking (6-1, 6-3). In the number one position, Ariel Ohno (Kent, Wash.) fell to Molly Knox (6-4, 6-2), while Audree Jenks (Albuquerque, N.M.) was defeated by Alyssa Ferry (6-1, 6-2). Anya Dalkin defeated Nicole Fleckenstein (Seattle, Wash.) (6-0, 6-4), Victoria Bravo scored a hard-fought victory over Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) (7-5, 6-4), and Kylea Gleason defeated Aya Sugimoto (Poulsbo, Wash.) in another tight match (7-5, 6-4).
Seattle University was able to take their second point of the match during doubles play as they scored victories from their number two and three pairs. Ohno and Cheng were able to hold on and defeat Dalkin and Stalking 8-6, while Schwab and Sugimoto were able to defeat Bravo and Gleason in a tight set, 9-7. Fleckenstein and Jenks fell to Portland States number one pair of Knox and Ferry 8-3.
The Seattle University women (2-2) will not return to action again until March 8, they are scheduled to host Pacific at the Seattle University Tennis Courts, starting at 10 a.m.
