The Seattle University women’s tennis team improved to 2-1 on the season Saturday with a 9-0 victory over Pacific Lutheran University at the Sammamish Club.
Seattle University got exceptional play throughout the day from all of their top six seeds. Ariel Ohno (Kent, Wash.) got the first point of the evening with a straight-set victory over Ashley Brooks (6-1, 6-0) in the number one position. At the number two spot, Audree Jenks (Albuquerque, N.M.) defeated Ashley Coats (6-1, 6-1). Nicole Fleckenstein (Seattle, Wash.) also pulled out a straight-set victory over Kristi Bruner (6-1, 6-0) in the number three position.
It was more of the same from Seattle down through the four, five, and six position. Whitney Cheng (Seattle, Wash.) was able to roll through her match against Jessica Wilson (6-0, 6-0), as did Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) against the Lutes’ Caitlyn Hoerr (6-0, 6-0). Finally, in the number six position Aya Sugimoto (Poulsbo, Wash.) was able to defeat Ali Burnside in straight-sets (6-1, 6-3).
In doubles action, it was Jenks and Fleckenstein pulling out the victory over PLU’s number one team of Brooks and Coats, 8-1. Cheng and Schwab defeated Hoerr and Stang in the number two position 8-0, while Mikalea Peterson (Spokane, Wash.) and Megan Reinhartsen (Sammamish, Wash.) defeated Burnside and Thach 8-3 in the third position.
Seattle University (2-1) will next take on Portland State Sunday, Feb. 15, in Portland, Ore. at 11 a.m.
