In a volleyball match decided by a series of runs, Utah Valley University had more scoring runs than Seattle University, as the Wolverines defeated the Redhawks, 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-20) Thursday night at the Shurian Activity Center.
Kaytlyn Dill (, ) led the way for with 14 kills and two service aces, plus she hit .310 and earned eight digs in the match. Libby Graff () finished the night with 11 kills, a .360 hitting percentage, and four block assists. Jamie Mellies (, ) notched 31 assists, seven digs, and two total blocks, while Jordan Keller (, ) had four total blocks and Shelly Anderson () earned a team-high 13 digs.
After scored the first two points of the match, scored seven of the next eight points to take the lead. After the Redhawks came within two at 14-12, the Wolverines went on a 5-1 run to expand the advantage again, and the hosts cruised to the victory in the first set.
(8-10) kept control of the match to start the second set, scoring seven of the first eight points. After head coach Shannon Ellis called a timeout, scored six unanswered points to tie the set, 7-7, but the Wolverines came right back with seven straight points of their own to retake the lead. The Redhawks fought back, coming within two points three times, but Utah Valley scored four of the final six points of the set to take a 2-0 lead into intermission.
After the break, took a 6-3 lead, but a 9-2 run by gave the home team the advantage and forced Ellis to again call timeout. The Redhawks scored the next two points after the timeout, but the Wolverines took the next four points and didn’t allow to get much closer in finishing off the match.
Kayli Broadbent led the Wolverines with 11 kills, with Kristin Anderson finishing with ten kills and only one error in 16 chances for a .562 hitting percentage. Setter Kristi Lindley notched 34 assists to go with five digs and three block assists, while Lanni O’Reilly led all players with three service aces and Allyce Wilson finished with 15 digs in the winning effort.
