Kelsey Johnson (Pasco, Wash.) shot an 87 to lead the Seattle University women's golf team in the first round of the Western Washington Women's Golf Invitational Monday at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

Johnson's 87 places her in a tie for 37th after the opening round, but she is only five strokes outside of the top 20. Dianne Alcantara (Hillsboro, Ore.) is in 46th place after shooting 94, followed by Michelle Grome (Edmonds, Wash.) in 47th place with a 98 and Caitlin McCleary (The Dalles, Ore.) in a tie for 48th place with a 99.

Paced by Brittany Carrera's 73 which leads the individual standings, Sonoma State is in first place in the team standings with a 310, eight strokes ahead of the University of British Columbia. Seattle University is presently in tenth place in the team competition with a 378 after the first round.

Seattle University will finish play in the tournament with 18 more holes beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
