The Seattle University women’s soccer team controlled the action throughout Sunday’s match, and after several near-misses, scored twice late in the second half to defeat the Eastern Washington Eagles, 2-0, at Championship Field.
’s first goal came in the 70th minute, as Kate Edstrom () sent a pass into the box. The ball was redirected by senior Kahlyn Keilty-Lucas () into the net for her first goal of the season, with Edstrom earning her first assist of the year.
The Redhawks added an insurance goal with just under 11 minutes remaining in the second half, as Kassandra Riozzi () sent a corner kick into the box. M'ily Reiter (, ) jumped for the header and beat Eagle goalie Ashley Renz for her first career goal at , ironically against the team she played for during her freshman year.
The home team took 22 shots and earned 14 corner kick opportunities while allowing only four shots and one corner kick chance from the visitors. Madison Goverde () picked up her fourth shutout of the season, needing to make only one save but also stopping a couple of Eagle plays before they turned into viable scoring chances.
Eastern Washington (2-7-2) stayed in the match thanks to six saves by Renz as well as a couple of team saves, as opportunities by Jamie Coe () early in the first half and Maryann Boddy (Bellevue, Wash.) early in the second half slipped by Renz but were cleared away by Eagle defenders. Kara Kuttler () led all players with seven shots, including a couple that just missed going into the back of the net.
“One of our goals today was to play a complete match, and I believe our players did that for the full 90 minutes in this game,” head coach Julie Woodward said. “This win gives us some confidence as we head back on the road for the next couple of weeks.”
(6-2-3) plays the next five matches on the road, starting next Friday, Oct. 10, at the University of San Francisco beginning at 5 p.m. After weekend trips to the Dakotas and , the Redhawks return home on Halloween to face Cal State Bakersfield beginning at 2 p.m. at Championship Field.
