Three Seattle University men's tennis players won their first round matches to kick off the 2008-09 season at the Eastern Washington/Gonzaga Classic Friday.
Wesley Nomi (Bellevue, Wash.) defeated Ben Demarois of Montana (6-3, 6-3) before losing to top-seed Pannhara Mam of Eastern Washington (6-1, 6-1). Alex Montgomery (Seattle, Wash.) won his first-round match over Michael Schuster of Gonzaga (6-3, 6-4) before falling to ninth-seed Felipe Raw of Montana (7-5, 6-0). Mark Shkretbtan (Redmond, Wash.) earned a win over Tomasz Falkowski of Gonzaga (6-4, 5-7, 1-0), but went on to lose his second round match to Art Karas of Eastern Washington (6-1, 7-6).
Playing super-tiebreakers in the consolation bracket, Dylan Reetz (Rockwall, Tex.) defeated Collin Fehr of Montana, 8-3, and Zack Peach of Gonzaga, 8-5, to move into the quarterfinals of that bracket, where he will face Scott Sullivan of Gonzaga Saturday. Joel Thomas (Edmonds, Wash.) received a bye in the first round of the consolation bracket and is scheduled to go against Casey McCoy of Gonzaga first thing Saturday morning.
Action in the Eastern Washington/Gonzaga Classic continues Saturday.
