The Seattle University women’s soccer team totally dominated the action throughout Sunday’s match against Boise State, but needed a penalty kick goal from Maryann Boddy (Bellevue, Wash.) midway through the second half to pull out a 2-1 victory over the Broncos on the second day of the Governor’s Cup hosted by the University of Idaho at Guy Wicks Field.
Similar to Friday’s match against , turned up the offensive pressure right after halftime, peppering goalie Liz Ruiz with three shots on goal, two of them by Kara Kuttler (), in the first 17 minutes of the half. With just over 17 minutes remaining in regulation, the Broncos committed a foul within the box, giving the penalty kick chance. Boddy converted on the shot for her second goal in as many matches.
(3-1-1) jumped on the board less than six minutes into the match, as Shannon Saxton beat goalie Madison Goverde () and knocked her shot past the Redhawk defense into the net. With the opposition scoring first for the fourth time in six matches this season, did not panic. Nine minutes after the Bronco goal, Ruiz misplayed a ball and left it alone in front of the net, allowing Jamie Coe () to knock it in for her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Saxton’s goal would prove to be the only shot credited to in the entire match, as outshot the Broncos, 12-1. Ruiz finished the match with six saves, while Goverde earned her third victory of the season without needing to make a save. earned six corner kick opportunities while had two corner kick chances, both in the first half.
With the victory, Seattle University becomes the first non-Idaho school to win the Governor’s Cup in the six-year history of the tournament, which features the three Division I schools in the state of Idaho (Idaho, Idaho State, Boise State) plus a fourth school invited by the host team. The Redhawks extended their unbeaten streak to four matches and joined the SU men’s soccer team with three victories over Division I opposition so far in the 2008 campaign. The All-Tournament Team is scheduled to be announced either later Sunday or Monday morning.
(3-1-2) takes a ten-day break before traveling east to face Pac-10 school in on Wednesday, Sept. 17, beginning at 2 p.m. The Redhawks then host in the home opener at Championship Field Sunday, Sept. 21, beginning at 1 p.m.
