The Seattle University women’s soccer team controlled play throughout Sunday’s match, scoring a goal in each half and receiving solid defense to defeat Cal State Bakersfield, 2-0, at the Main Soccer Field.
With under 14 minutes remaining in the first half, on Seattle University’s fourth corner kick chance so far in the match, Kassandra Riozzi’s (Marysville, Wash.) kick found the head of senior Madison Collins (Boise, Idaho). Collins’ header sailed into the left side of the goal for her first goal of the season, while Riozzi picked her first career assist on the play.
Seattle University picked up an insurance goal late in the second half, as Megan Fogarty (San Diego, Calif.) found Kara Kuttler (Redmond, Wash.) breaking in towards the net with less than six minutes remaining in regulation. Kuttler beat Roadrunner goalie Marina Constantinou for her second goal of the year, and Fogarty picked up her first assist of the season.
For the second consecutive match, Madison Goverde (Snohomish, Wash.) collected five saves in picking up the victory, earning her third shutout of the season in the process. Goverde was challenged early by Sarah Gaskins with two shots in the first 14 minutes of the match, but the freshman stopped both shots as well as two Veronica Ramos shots just before Kuttler scored her goal.
"This was a great weekend for the team, especially because of the contributions from some of our bench players," head coach Julie Woodward said. "Players such as M'ily Reiter, Megan Fogarty, and Alicia Malstrom really helped out over the past two matches and are great examples of the depth we have this season."
Seattle University (5-2-3) begins the second half of the 2008 season with a home match against Big Sky school Eastern Washington next Sunday, Oct. 5, beginning at 1 p.m. at Championship Field. The Redhawks have faced three Big Sky teams so far this year, posting a 1-0-2 record in those matches.
