Seattle University Women?s Tennis Opens First Season In Seven Years

Ariel Ohno wins in both singles and doubles on first day of Gonzaga/Eastern Washington Invitational

The Seattle University women’s tennis team opened play at the Gonzaga/Eastern Washington Fall Invitational Friday, as eight players became the first student-athletes to represent Seattle University in tennis since the spring of 2002.

The star of the day for Seattle University was sophomore Ariel Ohno (Kent, Wash.), as she won both her singles and doubles matches. In flight one of the singles bracket, the transfer from Washington defeated Amanda Mankovits of Eastern Washington (1-6, 6-0, 6-2). Ohno teamed with Audree Jenks (Albuquerque, N.M.) and defeated Sophie Lantta and Madeline Parker of Gonzaga, 8-3.

Katrina Schwab (Spokane, Wash.) was competitive in both of her matches. In singles, she took Caitlyn Bampton of Eastern Washington to three sets before losing (6-3, 4-6, 6-2), and then Schwab teamed with Aya Sugimoto (Poulsbo, Wash.) in the doubles bracket, losing to Clare Dodge and Aglaya Kokurina of Gonzaga, 8-4.

Also competing for Seattle University in at least the doubles bracket on Friday were Whitney Cheng (Seattle, Wash.), Mikaela Peterson (Spokane, Wash.), Megan Reinhartsen (Sammamish, Wash.), and Kathy Velasco (Federal Way, Wash.). Reinhartsen received a bye into the quarterfinals of singles flight three and will face Jana Siwa of Idaho at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Ohno and Jenks will face Martyna Novak and Liz Walker of Montana Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Ohno will then go against Daniela Cohen of Idaho at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon in the singles flight one quarterfinals. Other Seattle University players may see action depending on the setup of consolation brackets.
