Erin Martin, the greatest pitcher in the history of the softball program, has agreed to stay with the program as an assistant coach, announced recently by head coach Dan Powers.
Martin holds almost every single season and career pitching record at . She finished her four-year career last spring with an 89-33 record and a 1.88 earned run average. She pitched 111 complete games, including 36 shutouts, striking out 477 batters while giving up only 86 walks in just under 850 innings pitched.
Leading the Redhawks to their fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament over the past five years, Martin compiled a 25-6 record in the 2008 season with a 2.17 earned run average. In 2007, she received the Bill Fenton 101 Club Award as ’s Female Athlete of the Year after helping the softball team advance to the regional final, including two victories over top seed .
“I’m looking forward to a smooth transition, both for the team from Division II to Division I and for myself from a player to a coach,” Martin said. “I am excited to see the game from a different perspective, and I am happy to have found a way to give back to the program that gave me such a wonderful opportunity over the past four years.”
Martin replaces Brandi Gordon, who recently accepted the assistant softball coach position at . She will work with the pitching staff, including returning junior Kelsey Reynolds, redshirt sophomore Brianne Dieringer, who sat out last season after transferring from , and freshman Hannah Klein.
“I feel will be a great fit for our program as we make the transition to Division I. After completing a stellar career at SU as a pitcher, I feel she understands the direction we are headed towards and will help us reach our goals,” said Powers.
is presently in Year One of the reclassification process towards becoming a Division I member of the NCAA.
