Jamie Coe (, ) tied the match early in the second half with her third goal of the season, and freshman goalie Madison Goverde (, ) held off the host Sacramento State Hornets as the women’s soccer team earned a 1-1 tie Friday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field.
Down 1-0 early in the second half, took advantage of its first corner kick opportunity of the match. Sophomore Kara Kuttler (, ) sent the ball into the box, finding the head of senior Kahlyn Keilty-Lucas (). Keilty-Lucas’ header went to Coe, who found the back of the net for her third goal in as many matches.
(0-1-1), the preseason favorite to win the Big Sky Conference, took the lead midway through the first half. Ashley Forbes passed the ball to Leah Larot, who flicked it off to Kim Kemper. Kemper’s shot from the top of the goal box eluded Goverde and gave the Hornets a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.
Goverde redeemed herself throughout the rest of the match, collecting a season-high seven saves, including one late in the first overtime period off a shot from Jessica Gregory. also had a good chance with under 16 minutes left in the second half, but Danielle Holloway’s shot hit the post and bounced away.
Both teams had chances to win the match late in the second overtime. Hornet goalie Jenny Lawrence stopped an attempt by Megan Fogarty () with less than four minutes remaining in the match that would have given the Redhawks the victory. A minute later, Goverde saved an attempt from Kayelyn Satkowski that would have given the home team its first victory of the season.
also had a chance to end the match in regulation, but Maryann Boddy’s () shot on goal was saved by Lawrence, who finished the afternoon with five saves, three of them in the first half. outshot the Redhawks, 16-9, but was called for offsides four times.
(1-1-1) heads to to face the Spartans Sunday, Aug. 31, beginning at 1 p.m. The Redhawks will have three more matches away from home before facing in the home opener Sunday, Sept. 21, beginning at 1 p.m. at Championship Field.
