On Wednesday, May 21, Seattle University student-athletes took time from their busy schedules to host youngsters from the Rotary Boys and Girls Club for a Field Day in the Connolly Center.
Coordinated by sophomore soccer player Sarah Dean, about 40 kids from the club played games and participated in teamwork and leadership activities facilitated by 40 student-athletes from various teams. This event was the culmination of several events organized by Seattle University student-athletes to benefit the children at the Rotary Boys and Gilrs Club. In December, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, led by SAAC vice-president Ashley Porter, sponsored a Holiday Toy Drive. Porter was also responsible for overseeing Gilrs Sports Thursdays, in which female student-athletes from several varsity sports and clubs went to the Rotary Boys and Girls Club every Thursday to interact with the young girls, teaching them sports and activities they may not have been familiar with.
"The field day was a great way to finish the successful academic year working with the Rotary Boys and Girls Club," assistant athletic director Erin Engelhardt said. "Thanks to the staff and kids at Rotary for a great year!"
This activity is one of many undertaken by the Seattle University athletic department as it follows the university's mission of educating the whole person to become a leader in a just and humane world.
