head softball coach Dan Powers has announced that Jodie Schmehr has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the school and join the Redhawk softball program beginning in the fall of 2008.
Schmehr, a 5’3” middle infielder from , , has been a four-year starter on the varsity softball team at and is team captain for this year’s squad. She is a three-time all-league honoree, a two-time all-county selection, and also earned all-academic honors from the local newspaper.
“Jodie will come in and help us in the middle infield positions of second base and shortstop. She brings a solid glove and a good bat to our team. She fits the mold of what we are looking for in a student-athlete, both on the field and in the classroom,” Powers said.
With only three seniors on the 2008 SU squad, Schmehr will be joining a large, experienced group of student-athletes as the softball team begins the transition to Division I. She joins Hannah Klein, a pitcher from , who signed during the early period in November, as newcomers to the SU softball program next fall.
The softball team is presently 28-10 with a 10-4 conference record, good enough to be tied for the GNAC lead. The team heads on the road to face Montana State Billings Thursday, April 24, in a GNAC doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. local time.
