Freshmen d'Andre Benjamin (, ) and Clare Monahan (Centennial, ) represented Seattle University in the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively, Monday and Tuesday at the GNAC Multi-Event Championships, hosted by Central Washington University at Tomlinson Stadium.
Benjamin was able to pick up two points for the men’s squad toward the GNAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a seventh place finish in the decathlon, earning 5,077 points over the two days. Meanwhile, Monahan finished 11th in the heptathlon with 1,644 points.
Benjamin got off to a solid start Monday, finishing second in the 100 meter dash in 11.5 seconds and third in the long jump with a top leap of 6.05 meters. After posting a throw of 9.14 meters in the shot put, clearing 1.59 meters in the high jump, and finishing the 400 meter dash in 54.71 seconds, Benjamin sat in fifth place after day one with 2,852 points.
On day two, Benjamin ran the 110 meter hurdles in 16.94 seconds, posted a best effort of 24.64 meters in the discus throw, cleared a height of 3.20 meters in the pole vault, earned the third-best javelin throw with a top effort of 42.06 meters, and finished the 1500 meter run in 5:38.99 to end the day.
In the first day of the heptathlon, Monahan finished the 100 meter hurdles in 22.15 seconds, did not clear a height in the high jump, posted a top throw of 8.68 meters in the shot put, and ran the 200 meter dash in 30.92 seconds. Tuesday, she posted a top leap of 3.84 meters in the long jump, fouled in the javelin throw, and finished the 800 meter run in 3:00.48 to conclude the competition.
