The softball team pounded out 11 hits in winning the first game, then used timely hitting and solid pitching to complete the doubleheader sweep, defeating , 7-2 and 3-1, Sunday afternoon in GNAC action at Logan Field.
jumped out to an early lead in the first inning of the first game, as Megan MacIsaac () and Lauren Berin (Lacey, Wash.) drew back-to-back walks, followed by a single by Brenda Stice (Poulsbo, Wash.) to drive in MacIsaac. After Jamie Foote (, ) walked to load the bases, Jane Purdy () singled to center field to score Berin.
Berin drove in Katie Gould () with a single in the second inning. After Western Washington scored in the top of the third, Kaha Weir (Honolulu, Hawaii) hit her second home run of the season, driving in Foote and giving Seattle University a 5-1 lead. MacIsaac drove in two runs in the fifth inning to increase the Redhawks’ lead to 7-1.
Erin Martin () earned her 15th victory of the season, giving up five hits and a walk while striking out two batters. Sarah McEnroe took the loss for the Vikings, allowing eight hits and three walks in three innings of work.
In the second game, Foote led off the second inning with a double and scored on a single up the middle by Gould. (16-13, 5-3 GNAC) tied the game in the fourth when Michelle Wrigley singled and eventually scored on a grounder by Kelsey Anderson.
Seattle University took the lead for good in the fifth inning, as Foote laced her second double of the game down the left field line, scoring pinch runner Cassie Cueto (Benton City, Wash.). The Redhawks added an insurance run in the sixth inning as a walk and two Viking errors allowed Purdy to score.
Kelsey Reynolds (, ) returned to form after a rough time in last weekend, giving up only six hits and a walk while striking out four Viking batters in picking up her ninth win of the season. Jessica Rosencrants took the loss for , giving up five hits and five walks during the game.
Gould finished the day 4-for-5 with two runs scored, a run batted in, a stolen base, and a sacrifice bunt. Foote went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, and a run batted in. , tops in the conference and 16th in the country in fielding percentage, improved to a .973 fielding percentage with no errors during the day.
(24-6-1, 6-2 GNAC) heads south to Lacey, Wash., to face Saint Martin’s in a conference doubleheader next Friday, April 11, beginning at 2 p.m. The Redhawks will then host in a three-game weekend series, with a GNAC doubleheader Saturday, April 12, and a non-conference game Sunday, April 13, both beginning at 12 noon at Logan Field.
