Thanks to a solid offensive weekend that helped the 13th-ranked Seattle University softball team win four games against tough regional competition, sophomore Lauren Berin (Lacey, Wash.) has earned both All-Tournament recognition from the Mizuno Tournament of Champions and GNAC Player of the Week honors from the conference office, both announced Monday morning.
Last Thursday in a non-conference game against Cal State San Bernardino, Berin nearly hit one out of the park through a headwind, as her double off the centerfield fence drove in two runs in the fourth inning to give SeattleU a 2-0 lead. She also drove in the Redhawks’ third run of the game on a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
Berin was one of three players to start all seven games SeattleU played during the weekend tournament, batting .333 (8-of-24) with a double, two home runs, four runs scored, and nine runs driven in. She also walked twice and was hit by a pitch, producing an on-base percentage of .407 and a slugging percentage of .625 during the weekend.
Berin hit three-run home runs in SeattleU’s victories over and . She increased her hitting streak to ten games before missing out on a hit in the team’s final game against Cal State Dominguez Hills. Berin went 3-for-3 with a double and a run batted in against #20 Friday evening.
For the season, Berin is second on the team with a .383 batting average and leads the squad with four home runs, 27 runs batted in, and a .593 slugging percentage. She is also perfect in 63 fielding chances so far this year and is second on the team with 31 hits and nine walks. Berin is the third different SeattleU position player to earn GNAC Player of the Week honors this season.
