By winning three games in three days, including a perfect game and a two-hitter in back-to-back starts at Northwest Nazarene, senior pitcher Erin Martin () has been named GNAC Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive time, announced Monday morning by the conference office.
Martin started the team’s road swing Friday by setting down all 15 Crusader hitters she faced as cruised to a 12-0 victory. Martin struck out the side in the third inning to account for all her strikeouts in the game as she improved her record to 9-0 with the perfect game. It was the second perfect game of Martin’s career, as she previously no-hit ’s in a six-inning game on April 5, 2006.
Saturday, she helped the Redhawks recover from a first-game loss by allowing only two hits and a walk in earning her second shutout in as many days in SeattleU’s 10-0 victory over Northwest Nazarene. Despite giving up nine hits and four runs in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader at Central Washington, Martin earned her 11th consecutive victory by holding off the Wildcat offense at key times, including stranding runners at second and third in the seventh inning.
Martin presently leads the GNAC in victories with 11 and in fewest walks allowed, walking only five opposing batters in 72 1/3 innings. With this week’s honor, she has tied Tracy Motzny of for most career conference pitcher of the week awards with nine. Martin earned her 75th career victory at Sunday and her 30th career shutout Saturday at Northwest Nazarene.
(18-3, 4-2 GNAC), presently in second place behind in the conference standings, takes a break from competition for final exams this week. The team will head to , first to face Cal State San Bernardino Thursday, March 27, and then to participate in the Mizuno Tournament of Champions from March 28-30.
