For the third consecutive day, Jakub Jiracek (, ) earned a second-place finish, and Francesca Reale (, ) became the third Redhawk female to earn Division II All-America honors as the third day of the 2008 NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships took place Friday at the .
In the 100 breaststroke, Jiracek broke the school record with a time of 54.86 seconds in the finals, but it was 12/100ths of a second behind Christer Tour of , once again denying Jiracek his 11th individual national title of his career. Doug Djang () also earned All-America honors with a fifth place finish in a time of 55.94 seconds.
After six honorable mention All-America honors in her previous national appearances, Reale finally broke through, qualifying for the “A” final in the women’s 100 backstroke with a time of 57.15 seconds, seventh-fastest in the morning preliminaries. She finished eighth in the evening final, posting a time of 58.04 seconds.
Chris Coley () won the “B” final in the 200 butterfly, finishing ninth overall with a time of 1:51.82. Bryson Chiu (, ) also picked up a point for , finishing 16th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.99 seconds. Gordon Smith () finished 29th in the 500 freestyle preliminaries with a time of 4:41.22.
The men finished the night with a 14th place finish in the 800 freestyle relay, as Smith, Jiracek, Bryant Bevers () and Coley posted a time of 6:52.68. In the team standings, is in seventh place with 162 points, 19 points behind sixth place and 17 points ahead of PCSC rival UC San Diego.
Competition at the NCAA Division II National Championships concludes Saturday, with Jiracek the top seed in the 200 breaststroke in his final chance to set a new Division II record for career individual national titles. Djang and Chiu will also compete in the 200 breaststroke, and SeattleU will field a quartet for the 400 freestyle relay, the traditional final event of the meet.
