senior second baseman Jane Purdy (, ) has been named the GNAC Softball Player of the Week after leading all hitters in batting average at the Clarion Hotel Central Washington Invitational and helping to a 6-1 record over the four-day tournament.
Purdy posted a batting average of .579 during the weekend, earning 11 hits in 19 official at-bats. She started the tournament by reaching base in each of her first eight plate appearances with seven hits and a walk. Purdy also stole a base against Western Washington and stroked a double in the game. She scored twice and drove in four runs during the tournament.
Recovering from a knee injury that forced her to miss the second half of the 2007 season, Purdy has regained her spot at the top of Seattle’s batting statistics, hitting .488 (20-of-41) so far this year with five runs scored, two doubles, and nine runs batted in. She has also been perfect in the field so far this season, earning 17 putouts and 12 assists through the first 13 games.
This is the seventh time that Purdy has earned the conference’s weekly honor during her career, the most of any GNAC player. This is the second time that a student-athlete has earned Player of the Week honors this season, with Megan MacIsaac () being honored on Feb. 4. That same day, Kelsey Reynolds () earned her second career Pitcher of the Week honor.
(12-1) opens its home and conference season this weekend, as Montana State Billings comes to Logan Field for a three-game series. The conference doubleheader is Saturday, March 8, while a non-conference single game is scheduled for Sunday, March 9, with both beginning at 11 a.m. Live stats for all home softball games are scheduled to be available on GoSeattleU.com.
