The men’s basketball team hit its first eight shots of the game and finished at 59.6 percent field goal shooting as five SU players scored in double figures in Saturday’s 82-70 victory over Western Oregon in GNAC action at the .
Ryan Coldren () scored ten of his team-high 21 points in the first three and a half minutes as SeattleU jumped out to a 27-13 lead. Later in the first half, outscored the home team 13-6 over the final five and a half minutes of the half, but SeattleU still held a 39-32 lead at halftime.
(12-10, 5-8 GNAC) twice came within four points of the Redhawks, but SeattleU answered both times with 7-0 runs to keep the Wolves at bay. A layup by Mike McLaughlin cut the SeattleU lead to 66-61 with 4:14 remaining, but a three-pointer by Chris Gweth () and 13-of-14 free throw shooting by the Redhawks in the final three minutes gave SeattleU its fourth victory in a row.
Coldren shot 7-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-3 from the three-point line, and 4-of-4 from the free throw line in scoring his 21 points. Leigh Swanson (, ) again made a significant contribution off the bench with 13 points, while Shaun Burl () earned 12 points and six assists. Austen Powers (, ) made all four of his field goal attempts and all three free throw attempts to score 11 points, and Michael Wright () was perfect on three field goal and four free throw tries for 10 points.
Adonal Arrington led the Wolves with 24 points, shooting 8-of-9 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Sam Kelly hit six three-pointers for 18 points, while Travis Kuhns had five points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and two steals, but shot only 1-of-7 from the field. As a team, shot 51 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free throw line and won the rebounding battle, 26-21. However, the Wolves committed 16 turnovers while they were only able to force nine Redhawk turnovers.
Seattle University (15-7, 8-5 GNAC) heads to Alaska for its last road trip of the regular season, first facing Alaska Fairbanks Thursday, Feb. 21, before taking on Alaska Anchorage Saturday, Feb. 23, with both games beginning at 7 p.m. Alaska time.
