sophomore guard Cassidy Murillo (, ) will miss the remainder of the 2007-08 season due to a severe injury to her left knee suffered during last Thursday’s GNAC game against .
Six minutes into the game, Murillo hurt her knee driving around a Viking defender towards the basket. After being examined by doctors on Friday, it was determined that the injury was too severe for her to return this season.
Murillo had been the team’s most consistent performer, scoring at least eight points in each of the team’s first 11 games of the season. She was averaging 9.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 2.0 steals per game, shooting 50 percent (40-of-80) from the field, including 45.8 percent (22-of-48) from the three-point line.
Last season, Murillo was named GNAC Freshman of the Year, averaging 9.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. Starting 17 of the team’s 27 games, she was named to the Division II Bulletin All-Freshman Team, and her 54 made three-pointers were the third-highest in a single season in history.
With Murillo’s injury, the team will make one last roster change, as senior Chelsea Kungkagam () will wear #10, with Taryn Kellogg (Woodinville, Wash.) returning to #4 after not dressing in three games this year and Anne D. Kristensen (Aarhus, Denmark) wearing #5.
Seattle University (12-1, 3-1 GNAC) hosts Montana State Billings (6-7, 3-1 GNAC) Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Connolly Center beginning at 7 p.m. The Redhawks and the Yellowjackets are two of four teams with one conference loss chasing Seattle Pacific, the only undefeated team in the GNAC.
