After coming from behind and taking the lead late in the second half, turnovers by Seattle University and offensive rebounding by Alderson-Broaddus allowed the Battlers to defeat seventh-ranked SeattleU, 75-73, Friday night at the Oak Harbor Freight Lines Classic hosted by Seattle Pacific University at Royal Brougham Pavilion.
A free throw by Michael Knight () gave SeattleU a five-point lead with 1:08 remaining in regulation. Sam Liggins hit a three-pointer to cut the Redhawk lead to two, followed by two SeattleU turnovers followed by a basket by Jimmy Williams that tied the game. After another SeattleU turnover, Terrell Eargle missed a jumper, but after tip-in attempts by Williams and Stan Hall, Montel Lee converted on his tip-in with 0.2 seconds left for his only points of the contest.
Alderson-Broaddus (6-1) jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held the lead for the first 25 minutes of the game. SeattleU’s first lead came on a three-pointer by Ryan Coldren (), who finished the night with a game-high 21 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field, including two three-pointers, and 9-of-9 shooting from the free throw line. lost despite shooting 55.6 percent from the field, including 61.5 percent from the three-point line.
After doing nothing in the first half, Williams exploded for 19 points and seven rebounds in the second half to lead the Battlers. Liggins scored 17 points and Hall contributed 16 points, 12 of them early in the first half before seeing his minutes limited due to foul trouble. Despite shooting only 42.9 percent from the free throw line (9-of-21), the Battlers were able to emerge victorious thanks to 19 offensive rebounds and forcing into 17 turnovers.
Knight did not shoot the ball as well as he did last weekend, but he still finished with 14 points, while Leigh Swanson (, ) and Mike Boxley () scored ten points each. Swanson led the team with seven rebounds, and Chris Gweth () earned six assists and three steals to go along with seven points.
