After a slow start, the women’s basketball team picked up its intensity, forcing Hawaii Pacific to shoot only 23.6 percent from the field while shooting 50 percent from the floor in defeating the Sea Warriors, 83-49, Saturday evening in the fourth game of the 2007 Dave Cox Classic.
Ashley Jenkins scored eight early points, hitting two three-pointers in the first four minutes, as Hawaii Pacific took a 17-12 lead with 13:42 remaining in the first half. Seattle University stepped up its defense, not allowing a field goal for the rest of the first half while going on a 29-4 run to take a 41-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Leah Stepovich () led all players, hitting 6-of-7 shots from the field, including 4-of-5 attempts from behind the three-point line, to score 16 points in 18 minutes of play off the bench. Cassidy Murillo () had another solid all-around game, hitting three long-distance shots in scoring 13 points, plus she grabbed eight rebounds, dished out six assists, and earned two steals.
Jackie Thomas () also had a solid all-around game with four points, eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Every player who saw action for SeattleU played at least seven minutes and scored for the Redhawks, as committed only 14 turnovers while earning 21 assists on 34 made field goals.
Emily Kreutter led Hawaii Pacific (0-3) with 13 points, five rebounds, and two steals, while Jenkins and Karras Blate each scored ten points for the Sea Warriors. Seattle University won the rebounding battle, 50-31, but shot only 6-of-11 from the free throw line, while Hawaii Pacific made 19-of-27 attempts from the charity stripe.
In the third game of the Dave Cox Classic, Jenn Jacobs scored 21 points off the bench as pulled away from Notre Dame de Namur, 70-58. Jacobs hit 9-of-12 shots from the field, while Kristina Klapperich earned a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats. Romona Vae led the Argonauts with 12 points.
