Seattle Men’s Basketball Wins on Buzzer Beater

The Seattle Men’s basketball team grabbed a thrilling 60-59 victory over Cal State Stanislaus Saturday night at the . Ricky Berry () banked in a 3-pointer as time expired to lift the Redhawks.
took a 1-0 lead before the tip-off when Ryan Coldren () connected on 1-2 free throws as Cal State Stanislaus was assessed a technical in warm-ups. Stanislaus then went on an 8-0 run and did not trail again until ’s heroics in the final seconds.
trailed 27-19 at halftime after shooting just 17.9 percent in the first half. Early in the second half though, had two dunks in the first two minutes to begin to change the momentum and pulled within two at 27-25.
However, Stanislaus fought back pushing their lead to 11 with just over nine minutes to play when Calvin Westbrook knocked down a 3-pointer.
Slowly, began to break out of their offensive funk as they shot 45.2 percent in the second half. After scoring just four points in the first half, Coldren got it going in the second half to finish with a double-double, totaling 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Guards Shaun Burl (Berkeley, Calif.) and Chris Gweth (Beaverton, Ore.) also provided a spark with their pressure defense that led the Redhawks to holding the Warriors to just 16.7 percent shooting in the second half.
Burl finished with five steals, the last of which led to a lay-up to pull back to 58-57 with 1:05 remaining in the game. However, after missing a basket as the shot clock expired Stanislaus corralled an offensive rebound to force to foul.
Duane Jones connected on 1-2 free throws to set-up the final 25 seconds with trailing 59-57 with the ball. ’s original option on offense broke down, forcing a scramble to get off a shot.
Burl found on the right wing with two seconds to go and launched an off balance 3-pointer that found glass before settling in the bottom of the net. The buzzer-beater was the first jumper of the night to go down for who finished with seven points.
Other Redhawks in double figures were Gweth with 12 and Leigh Swanson () with 11. Burl finished with a team high six assists.
Seattle will next head on the road to play in the Notre Dame de Namur Thanksgiving Tournament in Belmont, Calif. Seattle will play Friday, Nov. 23 against Cal State Monterrey Bay at 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 24 against San Francisco State at 5:00 p.m.
