Thanks to multiple victories by several of the men, the Seattle University men’s swim team defeated both Linfield College (80-15) and Simon Fraser (53-42), while the women’s team defeated Linfield (82-13) but lost to Simon Fraser (63-32) Saturday afternoon in a double-dual meet at the Connolly Center pool.
Gordon Smith (, ), Doug Djang (, ), and Bryson Chiu (, ) each won two individual events as the men finished first in eight of 11 events. Smith was victorious in the 200 freestyle (1:44.51) and 500 freestyle (4:43.24), Djang came out on top in the 50 freestyle (21.71) and 100 freestyle (47.87), and Chiu finished first in the 400 individual medley (4:17.87) and 100 backstroke (54.62).
Just like last year at the , the men’s dual meet between and Simon Fraser came down to the final event, as seven points were up for grabs in the 200 freestyle relay. The quartet of Djang, Smith, Chris Coley (, ), and Bryant Bevers () won by a second and a half with a time of 1:28.34. Coley also won the 100 butterfly in 52.27 seconds.
On the women’s side, Christina Hunsberger (, ) was the only swimmer to win an event, finishing first in the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:55.87. Kelsey Henan (, ) earned two second place finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:58.56) and the 500 freestyle (5:18.85), as did Alex Weiss () in the 400 individual medley (4:47.93) and the 100 butterfly (1:01.89).
Other second-place finishes for the Redhawk women include Sarah Shannon (, ) in the 50 freestyle (25.62), Elizabeth Hanohano (, ) in the 100 freestyle (55.15), and Carole Triem () in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.08). Both the 200 medley relay team of Francesca Reale (Gig Harbor, Wash.), Triem, Weiss, and Shannon, and the 200 freestyle relay squad of Reale, Hunsberger, Hanohano, and Henan finished in second place in those events, finishing in 1:53.36 and 1:41.90, respectively.
The swim teams will travel to , B.C., for the Simon Fraser Clan Cup on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3. The next home meet for the Redhawks is Saturday, Nov. 10, against beginning at 2 p.m.
