After struggling in the first game, the Seattle University volleyball team received contributions from several players to come back and defeat Alaska Anchorage, 3-1 (22-30, 30-21, 30-27, 30-23) Thursday night in GNAC action at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
Seattle was led by the play of outside hitters Nikole Thompson (Marysville, Wash.) and Haley Bury (Roy, Wash.). Thompson earned 17 kills, 19 digs, and three block assists, while Bury contributed 15 kills and a .262 hitting percentage. Setter Jamie Mellies (Henderson, Nev.) was responsible for distributing the ball to the different hitters throughout the night, finishing with 47 assists as well as two service aces.
Libby Graff (Beaverton, Ore.) earned 11 kills and five total blocks in the match, while Emily Powell (Puyallup, Wash.) picked up seven kills, two aces, and four blocks and Josie Christiansen (Coquille, Ore.) added six kills and a team-high six blocks to the winning effort. Shelly Anderson (Bothell, Wash.) led the Redhawks defensively with 19 defensive digs.
Rhea Cardwell led Alaska Anchorage (4-6, 0-4 GNAC) with 16 kills and 27 digs, with Kim Stolk notching 15 kills and Rachel Kidwell (10 kills, 15 digs) and Joanna Johnson (10 kills, 16 digs) also earning double-doubles in the match. Setter Milica Micovic finished with 49 assists, but the Seawolves hurt themselves with 11 service errors and six reception errors.
Seattle University (5-8, 2-3 GNAC) heads to Fairbanks to face Alaska Fairbanks Saturday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. local time. The Redhawks face Central Washington in their next home game Thursday, Sept. 27, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Connolly Center.
