SEATTLE, Wash. - Joe Callero, Seattle University head men's basketball coach, has announced that Keith Brown has been hired as an assistant coach for the men's basketball program.

Last season Brown was an assistant coach for the D.C. Blue Devils AAU program in Silver Springs, Md., where he was responsible for implementing the conditioning program, coordinating and conducting practices, and developing individual skills. Last summer he was the head coach for the Portland Panthers AAU program in Portland, Ore.

From 2002 through 2006, Brown was an assistant men's basketball coach at the University of Portland, where he worked with both post and perimeter players in developing their skills. He also organized scouting reports, broke down game film, recruited potential student-athletes, assisted in coordinating and conducting practices, and assisted in academic advising. While with the Pilots, Brown also organized community service projects, team travel, and summer camps.

"I'm excited about joining the program as it continues to move in a positive direction," Brown said. "It is a pleasure to join Coach Callero's staff, as he is one of the hardest working coaches in the business."

Prior to his time at Portland, Brown was an assistant basketball coach and physical education instructor at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., from 1998 through 2002. From 1995 to 1998, he was an assistant varsity basketball coach at Inglewood High School in Inglewood, Calif. Brown holds a bachelor of science degree in sociology from Hampton University (1993) and a master of education degree with emphasis in physical education from Azusa Pacific University (2000).

"Keith has great contacts on the West Coast and knows how to recruit quality student-athletes to a premier academic institution like Seattle University. His knowledge of Los Angeles and his agreeable personality will be a great fit for our program," Callero said.

The mission of the Seattle University athletics department is to champion the holistic development of student-athletes inspiring a vital and engaged campus community through the development and maintenance of a premier, nationally prominent NCAA Division II athletics program, in the spirit of the Jesuit tradition. The university is beginning the process by which it will become a Division I member of the NCAA in the 2009-10 academic year.
