SPOKANE, Wash. - Sam Kirby (Sacramento, Calif.) was named GNAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week for the third time this season after helping Seattle University defeat Cal Poly Pomona and nearly beat Cal State San Bernardino during the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Tournament West Regional over the weekend.
In last Friday's victory over Cal Poly Pomona, Kirby hit a key three-pointer with 4:48 remaining in regulation to expand Seattle's lead to 56-51. He also made four free throws in the final 44 seconds to carry the Redhawks onto victory. Kirby finished the game with eight points, four rebounds, and a steal in 35 minutes of action.
Saturday against Cal State San Bernardino, Kirby shot 5-of-9 from the three-point line, two of those during a crucial 8-2 run that brought Seattle within two points, as he led the Redhawks with 21 points in the game. Kirby also pulled down four rebounds, earned four assists, and picked up two steals as the Redhawks nearly upset the Coyotes to reach the regional final.
Kirby finished the season as the team's leading scorer with 13.4 points per game. He made 66 three-pointers during the season, the eighth-most by a Seattle University player in a single year. Kirby, a Second Team All-GNAC selection, was also second on the squad in assists with 60 helpers and tied for the team lead in steals with 49 thefts.
Seattle University finished the 2006-07 season with a 20-9 overall record, reaching the second round of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Tournament. A Seattle University player was named GNAC Player of the Week eight times this season, and four players from the GNAC co-champions earned postseason recognition, the most of any conference school.
