ARCATA, Calif. - The goals continue to pour in for Seattle University as the Redhawks continued to light up the scoreboard on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Cal State Stanislaus on the first day of the Don Mild Memorial Lumberjack Classic at Humboldt State.
The Redhawks have scored nine goals in their three matches this season -- three tallies in each game. In Saturday's match, Seattle scored its goals on three of its first seven shots through 53 minutes of the match and cruised to the win afterward. Cal State Stanislaus outshot the Redhawks 13-9, but most of the Warriors' shots came near the end of the match when coach Peter Fewing had emptied the bench.
Just as the Seattle women's soccer program is off to its best start in nearly a decade, the Redhawk men are doing the same. With Saturday's win, Seattle's 3-0-0 record is the best start since the 1995 season when the men opened up the year at 10-0-0.
Bobby McAlister (Federal Way, Wash./University of Washington) scored twice more on Saturday to bring his early-season total up to five goals in three matches. He opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Nick Natale (Gresham, Ore./San Diego State) played the ball to McAlister inside the box where the Seattle junior knocked the ball into the corner for the early 1-0 lead.
Cameron Weaver (Kent, Wash./Skagit Valley College) made it 2-0 just five minutes from the interval when he took the ball in the box off his chest and volleyed it into the net. With his first goal as a Redhawk, Weaver becomes the fourth different Seattle player to score in three matches.
McAlister completed the scoring in the 53rd minute. Santa Maria Rivera (Yakima, Wash./Wenatchee Valley College) sent a free kick into the box where McAlister finished it into the upper-right corner.
Goalkeeper Jeremiah Doyle (Vancouver, Wash./Evergreen HS) recorded eight saves for his first clean sheet of the season.
Seattle will play San Francisco State on Monday in Arcata to complete the Don Mild Memorial Lumberjack Classic.
