After an outstanding weekend at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Matthew Seidel (Santa Clara, Calif.) has been named GoSeattleU.com’s Featured Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of May 9-15, 2016.
“Matt has done a great job creating a good relationship with his coaches and teammates,” head coach Trisha Steidl said. “That kind of environment is what helps an individual be as successful as they can possibly be. It creates trust in those you are working with as well as trust in yourself.”
At the WAC Championships, Seidel brought home two silver medals in the 10,000 meter run (30:46.21) and 5,000 meter run (14:28.40).
His time in the 5K was good for a new outdoor school record in the event.
Seidel finished the outdoor track and field season ranked No. 3 in the WAC in both events, an impressive feat for the sophomore.
“On top of creating good relationships, Matt has invested himself in his craft,” Steidl said. “He’s not just an athlete at practice, he lives the life. He does a great job focusing on the little things that are so important, especially when sandwiched all together.”
Seidel has been able to successfully balance the life of student-athlete, excelling on the track as well as in the classroom.
Seidel boasts a 3.827 cumulative GPA in Civil Engineering at Seattle University.
“He has a full, honest investment in what he’s doing,” Steidl said. “That investment pays off and continues to stoke the fire of enjoyment in his craft.”
