Grant Newton - Baseball

Thanks to his contributions to the improvement of the Seattle University baseball team over the past four years, senior Grant Newton (Bend, Ore.) has been named the Featured Student-Athlete of the Week on GoSeattleU.com.

This season, Newton has appeared in 47 games, including 39 starts, earning 31 hits, including four doubles, two triples, and one home run, plus he has scored 13 runs and driven in 19 runs. He started the season with a 2-for-3 performance against Saint Mary’s with a double, a run scored, and four runs batted in.

During his four-year career at Seattle U, Newton has played in 159 games, making 122 starts. In 2013, he batted .313 with six doubles, a triple, three home runs, and 13 runs batted in. Defensively, Newton leads the team with 235 putouts.

“Grant has been a model team player and citizen for us over his four-year career here. He has been a major piece of the building blocks for our program and is an incredible human being," Seattle U head baseball coach Donny Harrel said.

Academically, Newton is an accounting major within the Albers School of Business and Economics with a 3.345 grade point average. He received Academic All-WAC honors after the 2013 season.

Seattle University (26-25, 16-8 WAC) heads to Greeley, Colo., for a three-game WAC series against Northern Colorado, starting Thursday, May 14, at 3 p.m. local time (2 p.m. Pacific time). After that, the Redhawks head to Mesa, Ariz., for the 2015 Western Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament, a six-team, double-elimination contest in which the winner receives the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
